ASSISI (Day 7)

At 9am we met at the Basilica of St. Francis

It was here that we had mass right in front of St. Francis’ tomb. Apparently it’s only for rare occasions that they allow masses to be held in this chapel, but since we’re Franciscan University, we were allowed :) It was amazing. Here was the founder of the Franciscan order and the man our university is named after… right in front of us! And all during mass!

Walking tours with Fr. Brad continued after mass. I was being a little ridiculous and didn't want to pay 0.60 euro cents for a bathroom so I held it through the entire tour and was kind of miserable, until I was able to get to a bathroom, then I decided it was worth the wait :P

We ate lunch at the hotel after the tour and Lydia and I just talked for about an hour, and packed our bags since we had to have them all packed and outside our room by that evening. We got gelato at basically the only place still selling it after November 1st. We got a little lost trying to walk up the hill to Rocco Maggiore Castle - but when we finally found it, we were rewarded with a gorgeous view of Assisi. I tell you, we have seen some of the most spectacular views while in Europe!

We walked back down to town and went shopping for a little while, but we were feeling a bit burned out so we went back to the hotel. Mass for Sunday obligation and the blessings of the Tau crosses was at 5 o'clock. The Tau Cross comes from the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet, the tau, which was transcribed as a “T” in Greek. Saint Francis eventually accepted and adopted the “T” as his own crest and signature. For him, this symbol represented life-long fidelity to the Passion of Christ. It was his pledge to serve the sick and outcast of his day
Each of the students were given a necklace with the cross.
6am on Sunday morning the buses departed Assisi, I was definitely sad to be leaving :( I loved it Assisi SO much. On the way back our bus tire popped and set us back an hour :P other than that, we got back in the evening to the Kartause safely!
